Human Emergence - Like a Tiger Greeting Dawn

II am indebted to Howard Bloom for his luminous contribution to science. His recent article, The Material Power of Immaterial Things , invites us to peel back the familiar dome of certainty—so that what lies dormant in the world, and in many of us, can finally be awakened: like a tiger greeting dawn. It gestures toward the emergence, and eventual legitimisation, of a new paradigm.

By emergence , I mean this: when new, coherent forms of identity, intelligence, and order arise from relationship—from the interplay of many part-wholes —carrying qualities that cannot be found in the part-wholes alone. Emergence is what happens when interaction is shaped by the Pattern of all patterns , and a new pattern becomes a “something” with its own gravity.

Bloom writes:

“The time has come for science to probe the higher identities that pop out when you have a social gathering, whether it’s a gathering of atoms, a gathering of dust clouds, a gathering of their products—galaxies, stars, planets and moons. Or a gathering of complex molecules and cells in you and me.”

On this matter, Howard—I am with you.

For nearly eighty years, the subtle architectures of human becoming have been mapped with painstaking care: the psychological patterns and flows through which new Coping Systems —new Orienting Intelligences —rise into view. These are not merely private shifts inside individuals; they are the invisible shapers of culture, the seed-crystals of new paradigms—perhaps, in this moment, a pull beyond civilisation as we have known it.

From the primary research of Clare W. Graves , through later syntheses and interpretations (including Ken Wilber ), a through-line becomes harder to ignore: the shaping-up of humankind toward a higher order is not a fanciful dream. It is a living dynamic—a swelling of psychological space in psychological time—uneven, and yet inexorable. It reveals itself now through a crucible heated by our inability to cope, pressing at the membrane of the dome.

This journey of human emergence is, quite literally, beyond belief. To truly meet it requires more than information. It asks for a widening cosmic literacy : an awareness of the celestial and the terrestrial; an embrace of the universal and the cosmic; discernment between the mechanistic and the complex; and a posture of awe, wonderment, and humility. We know more than we ever did—yet what remains to be learned stretches beyond the edge of comprehension, like a night sky that keeps opening.

And so, in the short term, much of what is written, spoken, or practiced may not be “true” in any final sense. But it can still be useful—a raft, a compass, a provisional language—while we explore the further reaches of the Gross, Subtle, and Causal dynamics of our cosmos, and of ourselves.

Above all, we can choose to agree to disagree —and in doing so, witness first-hand the emergence of a new space of mutual exploration, at minimum two. This is the dome-peeling space that can equip us to truly nurture a Biological Universe , and humankind within it.

Emergence does not arrive like a conclusion.

It arrives like a tiger greeting dawn—ancient, watchful, and flamboyant.

Quest for a New Potato

Be prepared to be surprised.

In the 1530s , Spanish expeditions in the Andes encountered a crop that Andean peoples had been refining for millennia: the potato. Within a few centuries it became the world’s fourth most important food crop after rice, wheat, and maize — now grown across 150+ countries . ( FAOHome )

That’s the surface story: a tuber goes global.

The deeper story is about acceleration .

Because the potato didn’t just feed Europe. It altered what Europe could become.

The potato as accelerant

When a food system becomes dramatically more efficient, it doesn’t only reduce hunger — it changes the energy equation of a civilisation.

More calories per acre.
More reliable yields in marginal climates.
More surplus energy — and in Europe, more grain freed for storage, trade, and mobilisation.
More people supported on less land.
More people available for towns, mines, factories, armies.

Historians argue about how much the potato mattered, but the direction is hard to ignore. A landmark study estimates that the potato’s introduction accounts for about one-quarter of the growth in Old World population and urbanisation between 1700 and 1900 — precisely the conditions that underwrote industrial expansion. So yes: you can make a case that the potato helped Europe shift gear.

But here’s the twist: the gear it helped engage wasn’t neutral.

What paradigm did the potato accelerate?

Europe’s new momentum didn’t simply express “more life.” It increasingly expressed a worldview in which:

land becomes a production unit
nature becomes “resource”
value becomes what can be extracted, standardised, shipped, priced
and ultimately: life becomes something we can claim to own

This is why the potato works as a metaphor for the last five centuries : a burst of biological abundance that accelerates a civilisation into an era of domination-by-optimisation — often in the name of the “Good Life.”

And if you follow that arc to its current frontier, you can see where the logic points next.

Not just to industrial farming. Not just to chemicals, data, and supply chains — but to the aspiration of a synthetic form of life : life redesigned to be controllable, reproducible, scalable, licensable — and therefore commodified.

The “potato” is no longer a tuber. It’s a platform.

What the potato raiders left behind

Now return to the Andes, but look again.

What was taken was a crop that could be planted almost anywhere — both above and below the soil surface.
What was left behind can only be lived.

High Andean agriculture is not just a technical system. It is also an ethics — and a logic — of living with uncertainty: altitude, frost, thin soils, microclimates, and time. One of its signatures is diversity: not for novelty, but for resilience, for survival.

What emerged (and still endures in many Andean communities) includes ayni — ongoing cycles of reciprocity that exchange comparable work or goods, sustaining community and land together. ( National Museum of the American Indian )

And the biodiversity is staggering. The Andean highlands of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador are home to more than 4,000 native potato varieties , selected over centuries and adapted to harsh high-altitude conditions. ( International Potato Center )

So perhaps it is true:

Biological and psychological diversity is intelligence.
Reciprocity is infrastructure.
“Enough” is not a failure of ambition.
Change is inevitable — so be prepared to be surprised.

An enduring civilisation carries an implicit orientation between Tribe and Cosmos .

Is the now-familiar potato, then, not also a reminder of an explicit orientation — between humankind, its origins, and the Mystery?

Perhaps the quest of 2026 is for a seed of fresh awareness: a re-cognition, a discerning logic, an all-embracing intellect — where the viability of Earth and the viability of humankind click into alignment with an even bigger mystery than we ever thought possible.

I am not advocating going back. I’m building on a fundamental truth: our species is emergent. As Clare W. Graves wrote in 1974, we are attempting to negotiate “ the most difficult, but at the same time the most exciting, transition the human race has faced to date.” ( clarewgraves.com )

I have known Carl and tracked his writing for over 20 years. I devoured his new book in a few hours. Discernment and decision making in the death-throes of a paradigm

Should we Build Back Better?

We are all surrounded by mainstream messages of impending catastrophe and an increasingly technologically driven future.

At 5 Deep we know that a congruent Cultural-Mindset defines the shape and motives of a paradigm. It is therefore easy to identify the root cause of our current situation as the death-throes of a previously dominant paradigm that can no longer cope and is clinging, in blind faith, to that with which it has institutional familiarity; Economic Growth and Technology.

The evidence is clear that today’s problems are unintended consequences of yesterday’s solutions. Einstein warned us not to attempt to solve problems using the same Cultural -Mindset that created the problems in the first place.

‘Build Back Better’ is clearly the maxim of the last gasps of a Cultural-Mindset that cannot cope. With the power of our latest ‘nature-coding’ technology the unintended consequences of well-meaning large-scale adoption is trending towards an accelerated catastrophic loss of many life-forms.

We are all faced with a hard choice.

Do we all conform to the palliative care of an inexorably declining paradigm or do we choose to build upon the weak signals of a new way forward and lay the last paradigm to rest with gratitude, grace and ease. To choose the latter option requires some effort, especially when current norms tend to suppress any discussion of anything different being possible.

Thus far our civilisation has mastered the world of machines, or that which is controllable and predictable. We now have to master that which is complex, self-organising, and emergent; People, nature and economics.

Towards the what’s next naturally Cultural-Mindset:

The next Cultural-Mindset has to handle chaos whilst also shaping a new form of functional order than can handle paradoxes. Integral Psychology provides insights into the emergence of such complexity handling thinking that has become tracked since the early 20 ^th century. Holistic / Integral thinking is the vanguard of the next wave of human development.

Co-creating a new way of living:

The stimulation and utilisation of holistic / integral thinking is like awakening a sleeping giant. Frameworks that stimulate such thinking have been evolving over the past 70 years. At 5 Deep we utilise 2 fundamental frameworks that stimulate new levels of discernment, greater choice, and an alignment with the processes of nature.

The first framework builds upon the lineage of Clare W Graves and which today 70 years on has evolved into a highly practical approach that enhances one’s discernment and design capabilities. It has application across all aspects of society. We call this Full Spectrum Emergence, or ‘ Humergence ’ for short. We also focus on the utilisation of frameworks that stimulate comprehensive systemic awareness and practice that simultaneously address ecological, social and economic outcomes. We have significant activities in Agriculture which in our view is one of the most complex sectors in our present civilisation.

Holistically Oriented Living (HOL):

The shape of our future does seem to depend upon our ability to grow into a new paradigm which is shaped by a new Cultural-Mindset. What shapes that Cultural-Mindset is you and your Mindset which itself is shaped by the full spectrum of the complex adaptive intelligences that are available to our species.

The good news is that the fuzzy form of the Holistic / Integral Cultural-Mindset already exists and is being shaped by approximately 5% of global population. All we have to do is grow ourselves into this new way of thinking and shape the content. The evidence of success will be a viable planet and viable human species in Universe.

As was mentioned earlier this will take some effort.

Embrace the Whole

My Musing Moment this morning is inspired by a conversation I just had with the UK’s leading soil scientists. We are working together on a project and we are trying to bring together the many disparate views of conventional and emergent science into a new coherent story. We want to move beyond the ongoing debate and I am looking for stuff that works and a story or synthesis of what I call the vital signs of soil health. So we can save money and be much more effective in translating new insights, new knowledge, into practical reality, which in my view today, means that a farmer will be able to manage their land, with full ecological, social, cultural, and financial viability.

It's a new world that we're growing into. And what I wanted to bring into this Musing Moment is the challenge of bringing new thinking to bear. The new thinking (that I've been working with consciously since 97, but I realized that before that I was doing quite a lot innately ) is the whole appreciation of the spectrum of awareness that exists in our species that leads to different WorldViews, different interpretation. So, this morning, in my conversation, a lot of the soil analysis and scientific conversations comes out of the conventional paradigm, which is very reductionist, atomistic, looking at the smallest aspect and identifying that the health of that animal relates to that one aspect.

Now, I'm talking about the health of animals, the health of plants, and the health of the soil.

Orange Metaphor

If you watched the video of the Musing Moments, you will see I have an orange here. I want you just to ponder for a few moments on this orange. If you are reading this article just imagine an orange. Remember that the background to my musings is an exploration and examination of the practical application of holistic awareness, a more holistic integral awareness. There is an important distinction between those two ways of thinking and the way we function in our life on the planet today. I want you to just ponder this orange, and the processes that exist on this planet that lead this orange to be of the shape and form that it is at the moment. And obviously, I'm speaking to you in a habitat in a temperate climate, that is not the natural habitat of this orange.

Remember from an integral perspective, we're looking for different ways to embrace the whole and conventionally integral practise where we're considering the biology and the physical form of this orange. We're also one level looking at the underlying dynamic, the sentience, the capability of this orange to work with its life conditions and survive. We're also looking at how the dynamic of the orange as the fruit on a tree and the whole interspecies dynamic relates to thrive in a given context. And then last but not least, we've got how those species form an overall ecology, which can be patterned in its own right.

We’ve got a bio psycho-cultural and ecological ecosystems perspective that we're working with and is translated into plant speak. But remember that this is not about four dimensions dealt with separately. We are using those four windows to embrace the whole.

Now what we know is from an integral perspective, which is a framework of the universe, that there's the bandwidth of what shapes this orange is massive.

From the finite worlds to infinity.

From the physical to the gross.

From the gross and the subtle. and the causal.

From the physical world to the subtle, so that the subtle energy field that shapes this orange, right the way through to the causal dynamics in the universe, that that have different degrees of influence that lead to this life form here, this holon to exist in this particular context.

So, I'm using the language of integral psychology, integral theory, but fundamentally, this orange exists because of some complex meshing into the all. In this orange is an expression of the all. Equally, this orange is shaping the all because it's a unique expression that shapes the habitat as much as being shaped by its habitat.

Think about all the processes that go into leaving behind this pattern, this shape, this form of an orange. And we have to thank Rupert Sheldrake for giving us the language that helps us understand how the shape of the orange may form because the certainly is no known patterning in the genetic form that shapes the orange into an orange. Rupert Sheldrake would say that there's a morphic field that defines the shape of the orange and into which the orange is perpetually growing and recreating itself. As it goes through its lifecycle from the birthing of the seed, right the way through to the life cycle where there is decay it decomposes and returns to its mineral form. In that process, the seed has captured its legitimacy in its habitat and sprung forth the growth of a new orange tree. Here I'm starting to talk about the successional dynamics of a given lifeform. Now, whether it's a virus, microbe, soil, plant, animal or human, there is this fundamentally similar pattern of the successional dynamics, but different contexts.

Now, what I want you to imagine is that plants and species such as this orange first emerged somewhere between 320 million years ago or a bit later. Plants of this stature have been around for a while. I will need to check into the Paleo geology or the Paleo history and just check when orange tree blossoms and fruit are first spotted, but it's not important to have that level of detail for what we are discussing here. What we're dealing with here is an understanding that at some stage, many millions of years before the human species emerged, this orange plant emerged. And all it could rely upon were all the processes; chemical, biological, subtle and causal that existed to leave behind this pattern of this particular form.

And the language I use today, I want to build upon what Rupert Sheldrake is done in this morphic field. The way I think about this today is this plant, at this moment creates a standing wave. It draws in all the insights and processes of the universe to create its form. And for the period to exist, it is the fullest expression of that particular signature that is possible.

It equally means that as a standing wave, it has access to all the information of the universe and beyond, that pulls together, the biological, the chemical, and the other shaping influences and processes that took nearly 13 - 14 billion years to create on this planet, the possibility of this plant existing. It's an absolute miracle. But think of this orange as a standing wave. An expression of the plant’s impression of its habitat. And its interaction with that habitat that operates within a certain bandwidth. Orange trees don't grow around here in the UK, the temperatures are outside its bandwidth, for example. So, within a certain bandwidth, this plant can thrive and sustain itself. Isn't that amazing?

Now, it's equally amazing when we apply that premise to ourselves. In my biological form, in my language around full spectrum emergence, I am a solid human form. Now, this may take you more into the subjective aspects of our world today. But consistently, if I'm dealing with a more holistically oriented science, if the evidence is repeated from many sources, we have to pay attention to it. So today, the language I use around the human form, (and I use the word holon here for the orange,) we are more complex, in that we can look back in and perceive these processes. I'm not aware that the orange can do that it's sentience and can interact with this habitat. But it doesn't have that capacity to cognize and interpret these processes of nature. One function of our species is to look back in and comprehend and learn about the processes of this universe.

As a species the patterns are similar, whether it's an orange, an orange tree, or me; I am a standing wave. You are a standing wave in this universe. Where all the processes in every aspect of your existence have been derived at some stage, in this 14.8-billion-year journey that leads us to have this conversation today. It means that I'm drawing in a whole range of experience that was hard run in earlier life forms. An orange is an early life form, that contributes to human existence today. And obviously, the successional dynamics of the physical form continues from a human emergence point of view into the waves and stages of psychological development, that today I would call full spectrum emergence. That full spectrum considers all aspects of the holon and the solon in terms of the evolutionary dynamics, the successional dynamics. This means that in a given habitat or a given context, this orange (or I) thrives.

Now, what we know is that we have adaptability. I can travel quite freely to different parts of the world and adapt to the habitat; the orange has not learned that requisite variety. It's limited in terms of its ability to replace and relocate. But equally, as climate changes, or as local weather patterns change, it may well mean that the area in which this particular type of plant can thrive, will change and vary, and the plant can learn to adapt and modify itself slightly to adapt to those life conditions and still appear to be an orange.

So just to recap. States, and transitions. Waves and stages of development. We can analyze from a bio psycho-cultural social systems perspective, or another way of looking at it from this plant in terms of the ecological form the ecological dynamics, we can say, this plant is dependent on the supply of minerals, a good supply of water, solar energy, and complex interaction with all other life forms. Now in holistic management as well laid out and the water cycle, the mineral cycle, the energy flow, and community dynamics communicates the four dynamics, four windows into the whole, through which we can understand the overall vitality of this particular life.

It means that if I'm going into a piece of land, and I'm assessing the vitality of a piece of land, using some of the metrics we have developed, we can see if this orange has a standing wave.

Is there a standing wave that could hold a healthy orange? Where the orange neatly fits into the wave.

Is the standing wave different to the orange that's manifest itself in this location? Maybe the wave is a shift away from the existing orange.

If the standing wave is shifted from the actualized orange, that means that we can often find chemicals and other things that interfere with the full realization of that orange into its most flexible and dynamic form with full health and vitality. There is a principle here. Even though I've got a degraded form of the orange, it still has that capacity to grow into its full potential. If you remove the chemicals the orange will grow back into that full form. What I'm also suggesting is that, if that's the recovery path, to get to a regenerative state, there's always a creative evolutionary dynamic in the universe. So, in a regenerative state, there's always a higher form that seems to be inviting the plant to operate within a certain bandwidth, so it can fully adapt and respond to the life conditions in which it finds itself.

If we go in and change the life conditions too far too fast, we drag it down away from its normal healthy bandwidth, that plant will die. If we push it too far, the other way artificial the plant will die. Life forms smaller than us remain in a remarkably fine bandwidth. A change of temperature by a fraction of a degree can mean the difference between life and death for many of our microbial partners on this planet. Whereas I can sit here with my snood (scarf/dickie) and my clothes. And I can operate on a much higher bandwidth from freezing temperatures to probably about 50 degrees Celsius would be the temperature that I could operate in as long as the humidity was not high. In the case of 35 degrees, Celsius with very high humidity would kill me. Even I in my physical form has a bandwidth.

All the while, what I'm asking you to be aware of is the sweet spot of the integral conversation is not in the quadrants, it's in the sweet spot of the meshing of all these dynamics into a complex whole. In the human form, I call that solon . Where the soul is enmeshed with the physical form, the holon . And that I believe is the best way I can describe a lot of the features in spiral dynamics, which is the V MEME - is an organizing dynamic that shapes and influences interactively with our biological, psychological, cultural, and social systems dynamics. And most importantly, there is depth and the depth around the integral perspective, the depth takes us into the stages and waves of development that shape our capacity to bring to language and bring to metaphor, our impression of how life functions in this context.

Either from the first-person perspective, or to conceptually appreciate the successional dynamics of this orange, or that blade of grass, or that field of grass or that animal, is being continually recreated into a standing wave of possibility. And knowing that there's a probability if you set the life conditions right, this orange will go back into its form, or it's an optimum vitality. Knowing that Nature never matches perfectly. Nature always leaves room for flexibility to adapt. And so it is with our human form. We have our centre of gravity, which is the fullest expression of fullest utilization of the dominant waves of consciousness around which we operate. And it's through those waves of consciousness that we interpret and perceive and interpret the information we receive about our habitat, and also about how we process minerals, how we process water, etc, etc.

Suddenly, we expand medical awareness into a whole new integral ability. Because each stage of development has different nutritional needs, water needs, interaction needs, and energy source needs. That is why in our work together, we need to learn to move beyond a flatland approach and interpretation where everybody is the same, to really celebrate the successional dynamics and the amazing meshing together of the all into you, or myself, at this moment, because it's standing wave expression, where we're drawing in information from the all to equip us in our current biological form, to be viable, and contribute to a creative, evolutionary dynamic that still lies way beyond our comprehension. But we can surely work with the principles, postulates and patterns of what we observe. Because the more we do that, the more our innate knowing moves beyond feeling. And the more we grow into that space, the knowing of the knowing can come together to help us support the creation of a world that works for all and become the platform for freedom for the next wave of our creative evolutionary journey. An Invitation to a New Way Forward

Christopher Cooke would like to invite you to Holistically Oriented Living Training.

We feel we are responding to a need for people to make sense of what is happening in their own family, community and society as life on this planet becomes increasingly complex. Holistically Oriented Living – A natural consequence of Full Spectrum Consciousness

Embracing the Moment

Humanity is shifting.

Many are ready, willing, and able to Show-UP and Act-UP to embrace a new way forward. To do so will utilize latent human capacities to Shape-Up the recovery, regeneration, and renewal of life on Earth and assume a significant role in Universe. Homo-Sapiens-Integral is our emergent expression that equips us to ‘be, think and do’ in this ‘holistically oriented’ manner.

A viable human species is one that with volition aligns with, and contributes to, a creative evolutionary Universe.

In truth, we are a life-form that meshes with, and is an expression of The All. Each of us is like a unique standing wave that is shaped by the enduring deep patterns and codes that shape our unique personality. Our acceptance of this and our growing appreciation of the Full Spectrum of Consciousness is our foundational knowledge.

We embrace the beautiful dynamics of existence to discern new ways forward from the soil (ecology) to the stomach (vitality) to the soul (the spark of civilization and Universe).

Integral -Waymaking to Bridge Worlds

There is a niche group that needs serving. These beings are reaching out for new ways forward beyond the edges of the present paradigm. We assume that they number some 5% of global population. They know that a fundamental rethink is necessary as the basis for a proactive journey into a new way of living. They have been practicing over many years as they learn to utilize their new thinking to a point when there is no way back. These are the Integral-Waymakers who are equipped for an Integral Age. Their hallmark is their volition, acceptance, invisibility, humility, experimentation, demonstration of stuff that works.

5 Deep has served well as a vehicle for experimentation in Integral-Waymaking.

Inspired by a premonition shaped path, we are always open to ‘tomorrows thinking today’.

A New Way Forward is Calling

What-if 2024 is the year in which humanity is invited to choose a new way forward? How would we prepare for that?

Imagine May 2024. An International Festival commences in Japan and rapidly embraces all Nations. This event lays the foundation for our volitional journey into a higher order significance. The festival spawns individual and collective imagineering with commitments, and capabilities, to experience a truly desirable quality of life. No longer will life be like a pinball flipped to win or lose. Holistically informed decision-making releases unique and proactive contributions at all scales.

In May 2025, the conversation about our next civilization commences. All expressions of dictate, debate, dialogue, and discernment assist to shape this path. All decisions are checked at source to assure their contribution to the agreed quality of life. What no longer serves us will be laid to rest with gratitude for its contribution. What works well will be refreshed to contribute to a new way forward. Above all else, new approaches will flourish and be lived proactively. Being approximately right in the domain of ecology, culture and social systems will reveal progress with pace.

Seed Minds Lead the Way

New ways forward will be pioneered by those who know and are proven competent in these times. Such Seed Minds have been in preparation for many decades. There is much wisdom for us to mine and utilize. For example: The designers of the City of Canberra in Australia imagined it to be the place where the conversations about the next civilization would be held. Such a conversation would transcend Nationhood and The Corporate State. Imagine a corroboree of international unification where celebration and the open exchange of knowledge leads to new ways forward that irresistible to all citizens. Holistically informed planning accelerates our swelling into an inspiring, quality of life inducing, cacophony of humanity.

A by-product of this unifying, human creativity inspiring, expression of what we really want life to be like on Earth, may be a volitional freedom and peace that embraces our species. It is ours if we choose.

The Secret behind the Premise

Whilst we are clearly a problem solving species there are times when we outgrow our capacity to cope. History and present day media is littered with stories of casualties where adherence to the dominant social norms no longer work. It tends to be a social inability to meet basic needs that first reveals itself, then mass migrations, conflict, and rapid desertification follow at a pace. Whilst one could point at the present pandemic as an example, it pales into insignificance against the backdrop of the multiplicity of problems that we are creating for ourselves as we continue to dominate the natural order of life on Earth. Our increasingly refined, life-flow breaking, chemical and genetically modifying substances, are compounded by a fear and greed based work ethic that is past its sell by date.

As we approach 8 billion humans on Earth, the forbidden inner cries of “we cannot cope!”, haunt the dreams of some politicians and citizens alike. Many are struggling to keep up and stay alive. They seek the secret.

The secret however is never the method. We can never replicate the past. Why go backwards when you really want to go forwards. Knowledge and appreciation of what’s next naturally, successionally, and how to get out of the way of unwittingly blocking it, this is The Secret.

Keeping ahead of Life

5 Deep was established as an experiment to participate in a niche; an eruption of Humanity growing into new ways of thinking unlike anything prior. Yes it seems that we are always growing into a change that has already happened. Keeping up with whom we have become is our hero’s journey. According to Clare W Graves, the primary researcher behind Spiral Dynamics, the weak signals in his research held clear evidence that the leap for humanity was ‘literally beyond belief’, and heralded the emergence of a new species. A significant shift from Human Doing to Human Being as we leave behind the last vestiges of our innate animal kingdom heritage Everything we ever believed to be true is to be inevitably turned on its head for us to move forward.

Back in 1998 my knowledge of such a niche was a premonitional knowledge which, when made visible by Spiral Dynamics, fuelled an immense relief. What an experiment to be lived; Acting-Up-INTO a new paradigm waiting to be born because the life conditions demanded it! What a gift to be able to then select and access appropriate ‘holistically’ informed maps and frameworks to Shape-UP a new way forward.

Maps and Frameworks Guide the Way

Jan Smuts, Arthur Young, Clare W Graves, Don Beck, Ken Wilber, Howard Bloom, and Allan Savory are examples of individuals who have created, refined, and practised with meta-maps and meta-frameworks that extend from the soil, to stomach, to Soul. To be attracted to such meta-maps and frameworks, and persist through long term application of their insights, principles and postulates, means to Shape-UP one’s holistically informed meaning making by accelerating a contextual and meaning reframing. This is humanities signature for the emergence of fresh coping abilities.

Stance Matters

Cry’s of heresy often rain down on the meta-map and meta framework creators. Accusations of ‘conventional scientific heresy’ lead to contaminated replications that will never work as they are bent upon proving the originators wrong at any cost. Such contaminated applications reduce holistically shaped thinking to the conventional. Glee erupts when the results are so poor in comparison. If only the accusers were aware that they are often unwitting engineers of their own, and the human species, extinction, as they blindly discard the weak signals of the successional dynamics of biology and psychology as chaff and stay with what’s normal.

The clear evidence is that the ‘clean’ application of such seed-mind-informed mappings and frameworks leads to an experience of a holistically informed lifestyle where what you choose to do ‘works’ and often ‘outperforms the present paradigm’.

With such successful application practitioners grow into who they have already naturally become and thus legitimize legitimate shaping up their new lifestyle!

In the LEAP to a more holistically oriented lifestyle everything you believed to be true becomes re-examined and tested against the Quality of Life you desire. In the world of the complex, approximation replaces certainty as you navigate your way to deliver stuff that works pretty well and reliably. Everything becomes an “I choose to by design” as we grow into new communion at a planetary level.

A New Age of Freedom — if I could but see it

RethinkX has produced a provocative publication entitled, Rethinking Humanity, by James Arbib and Tony Seba, June 2020. They argue that a New Age of Freedom awaits us but assert that this future is by no means predetermined. I have something to say about that.

"We are on the cusp of the fastest, deepest, most consequential transformation of human civilization in history, a transformation every bit as significant as the move from foraging to cities and agriculture 10,000 years ago." — James Arbig & Tony Seba

I was made aware of Rethinking Humanity through a dear Hindu friend who enticed me to study the text with him. His observation that this writing highlights a future with significantly reduced cruelty on our planet drew me in.

I recommend you taking the time to read this publication. It is thoughtful, gentle yet assertive, and well-written. It offers some of the most reliable complex adaptive systems modelling that I have come across in the Consultancy world.

Rethinking Humanity reminds us that technological innovations, such as the motor car, or the smart phone, arose quickly and radically changed our lifestyles. They came about through the convergence of many other innovations that made the new concept possible. The indirect social and economic consequences were surprising, and change occurred in noticeably short periods. Such innovations become demanded by the customer initially due to novelty, followed by a reduction in costs, and significantly enhanced convenience. Demand-led acceleration by the citizen’s investment choices seems to create more radical and lasting change than any democratic process.

10X Cost Reductions Over the Next 10-20 Years

The authors predict that over the next 10-20 years, the rapid convergence of multiple technologies will inevitably enhance our ability to manage information, energy, food, transportation, and materials. Cost reductions of typically 10X are expected to be the norm. Efficiency will increase 10X with 90% fewer natural resources being utilized and 10X – 100X less waste. Above all else, the meshing together of these technologies will lead to the possibility of localized creation of goods and services. This economic imperative could contribute significantly to what the authors describe as a New Age of Freedom.

This Age of Freedom is characterized as a possible shift from a world of scarcity to abundance, from resource- extraction to biological-creation, and from centralized existence to localized living. The authors clearly recognize that large scale social change is never the domain of technology or economic forces alone. The invitation from this work is to utilize new ways of organizing ourselves to navigate our Civilisation through what promises to temporary yet turbulent times.

Fast Recovery of Earth’s Ecosystem is Possible

I found myself drawn into a deep pondering of what if this were true, and how would I address the gaps in what is written? Within me, a pause button had been activated. It took a few days.

I can now imagine that if we choose to seize the opportunity presented by the convergence of these new technologies to fund and legitimize the new era transition, whilst also choosing to utilize latent, complexity aware, ecological, cultural, and spiritual wisdom to define the social boundary conditions and policies, then the beneficial social and ecological impact will be immense. Within 3 decades, within my lifetime, I can imagine that hunger, poverty, mass migrations of people, and the reason for war over finite natural resources could all be gone. My Hindu friend is probably right too in that wilful cruelty in the name of economic progress will be unnecessary. I can imagine the fastest recovery and regeneration of Earth’s Ecosystem. I can imagine us assuming our role in The Universe as a viable species on an ecologically vibrant planet.

Are 8 billion earthlings poised to embrace this opportunity to move from human doing to human being? This I believe, is what Rethinking Humanity is enquiring about. I interpret its foundational message to be that this next phase of technological opportunity requires new ways of thinking about how we organize ourselves, our societies, and our Civilisation.

New Age of Freedom

Perhaps this transition to a new era is what William Morris had a premonition of when, in the late 1880’s, he projected himself into the late 21st Century through the eyes of the lead character, William Guest, in his paradigm inverting essay entitled, News from Nowhere. After a particularly challenging day in the late 1800’s, William Guest struggled to imagine anew way forward. “if I could but see it” he implored repeatedly whilst falling asleep. On awakening he was in a utopian Nowhere. Perhaps what is now here is an awakening into a New Age of Freedom.

I am left with a question: ‘Are we ready to go off the present map of Civilisation with volition and redefine everything we believed to be true?’ More importantly, are you ready, willing, and able?

Human beings always do the most intelligent thing…after they’ve tried every stupid alternative and none of them have worked. – Buckminister Fuller.

My sense of humour plays a significant role in keeping me vibrant. Whilst socially legitimised inanity[ii] seems to be the name of the game, I need to find ways to stay on track. These lyrics by Stealers Wheel trigger for me laughter informed refreshment, and often spontaneous song. They hopefully, will assist me in engaging you more meaningfully on a challenging topic—the importance of bringing holistically informed fresh thinking to light on Earth.

“Stuck in the middle with you”.

I am delighted to live in a world of evidence-based science, especially as human creativity in this domain is so dynamic and always innovating atomistically to make-visible and measure what was until recently invisible. However, there is a problem. As the previously immeasurable becomes visible, our challenge is to interpret the new patterns appropriately in alignment with how all life-works. The more subtle our metrics, the more we move away from the abilities of a Newtonian ‘Clockwork Universe’ view of All-life, to deduce reliable meaning.

From my life-long study and practice of human emergence based upon the research lineage of Clare W Graves, the last 100 years has revealed the development of a new worldview that offers a more Universe centric, or Holistic interpretation of the data.

We need to manage holistically, embracing all of our science and traditional knowledge – all sources of knowledge. We can do that from the household to government to international relations. — Allan Savory

History shows us that when old ways of thinking cannot manage, any new offerings of interpretation or solutions are inevitably heretical to the fiercely protected ‘old ways’. Amidst this tussle fear, insecurity, anger, guilt, panic, depression, frustration and loneliness most probably arise across a population and, in many cases, the harbingers of a new way forward are cast out as heretical by an unwitting mob. It is as if an invisible force of culture causes individuals to cling to outdated norms and ideals as if they were clinging to a high-altitude trapeze bar. The comfort of the old bar encourages a tight grip with the myth of best-practise whilst a hidden fear of an imagined fall, and the irrational fears of shame, blame and guilt slowly tighten the grip to manic proportions. Such tension will inevitably lead to desperation as the energy to cling-on wanes, and panic-induced actions do more harm and further weaken our grip.

Socially elected positions of authority, power, and influence currently depend on assuring a social spectrum of subconscious dependencies and innate needs. These include quality food, air and water, shelter, warmth and information, whilst meeting the requirements for a collective sense of safety, creative expression, security, enterprise, prosperity and community.

The gap between the experience of a Citizen and their subconscious demands shape this middle ground as a prime space of messiness for all Nations and Earth’s current civilisation.

I suspect that future history will show us that this was a time when our cultural narrative was the most disconnected from the reality of the Divine, our Universe and ourselves. Yet like a child moving through adolescence, it was a phase we had to go through.

So where is the new trapeze bar?

All change starts with an inspired individual who can see a way forward and despite many inner and outer challenges and adventures, they succeed in demonstrating the truth of their insights in practical ways to overcome the irrational cultural projections. It requires staying power and stamina for a long haul of many decades. Seemingly, Nature does not like to release the next new version until it is fully-tested and the old approach is past its sell-by date.

To differentiate between a worldview that strives to control and dominate the world through a reductionistic and entropic stance from a worldview inspired to shape the emergence of team humanity on a viable planet through a holistic and syntropic perspective is significant. All evidence suggests that a Holistic awareness is the essential future proof thought leadership capacity of this Century. Such thinking, if current trends continue, will continue to evolve and refine further to equip humanity to be the eyes, ears and insatiable curiosity of an eternally regenerative creative Universe.

For you to accept and appreciate that the Clowns to the left and the Jokers to the right reflect the deeper dynamics of the Universe acting out in human form results in personal freedom.

In the words of Buckminster Fuller, “We are called to be architects of the future, not its victims.” For myself, here I be.

Virus Creates Space for New Thinking

No, this isn’t the New Normal. The world is in a holding pattern, as familiar systems and structures are replaced by temporary ones, giving us the sense of living between worlds.

We have no idea what the New Normal is going to look like. It would be a mistake to think we do. The corona virus is creating new life conditions in a way that would have been unimaginable just a few months ago.

Space for new thinking

It is easier to accept the uncertainty of this interim period if we can hold hope in our hearts that there is a silver lining in the cloud of global pandemic. What is that silver lining? The corona virus is creating space for new thinking to emerge.

New worldviews that are latent within us may emerge, or not, during crisis

Every single person is facing a new reality right now. Each one is coping in their own way. Some are up-stretching, searching for new, ways to think, ways that can help them cope and make sense of it all. Whilst others are down-stretching, yearning for a return to simpler times and the good old days, when we believed that technology could solve everything.

This interim period gives us time to ponder life’s important questions

It’s as if someone has pressed a PAUSE BUTTON, forcing every one of us to stop from the busyness, giving us time to ponder important questions.

Questions like, ‘What’s really important to me?’ ‘What is life really all about?’ And most importantly, ‘What needs to change?’

The new global life conditions are creating space for Team Humanity to stop, reflect, and take new action, as never before. Whilst there is much suffering, there is also a great outpouring of love in countless acts of service from one human to one another. Even the simple act of staying home is an act of love.

The 14th Century Plague led to new thinking

We know from history that new paradigms come on strong during crisis. The scientific-materialistic worldview emerged following the 14th Century Plague. The European population was reduced by an estimated 30% to 60%, and it took 200 years to recover to previous levels.

New worldviews are emerging

It is easy to spot the emergence of new worldviews in agriculture, a sector that has already been in crisis for some time. What will the new paradigm look like?

Interestingly, the more we explore and test, the more we do not presume to have any idea of what the new paradigm will look like.

Why? In this interim period before The New Normal emerges, we are all being stimulated to question every basic assumption around how we organise ourselves on Earth. This will be a decades-long process that is needed to assure a viable planet and to equip Team Humanity to fulfil a worthy role in Universe.

How can we support new thinking in ourselves?

It is important during crisis not to jump to premature solutions, even though the temptation is there to do so. Very often, the obvious solutions, such as to develop a vaccine, do not address the underlying root cause of the problem, and may actually make the situation worse, because they come from the very same thinking that led to the problem in the first place.

A critical first step is to use this interim period to discover the true underlying root cause, so that we address the problem, not just symptoms.

Be Warned! You are already involved.

You might be thinking to yourself, ‘Am I part of this too?’ You most certainly are. During this interim period, we are literally navigating a major leap for mankind, and every single one of us is needed to make the transition.

Just accept that every day is going to be different. And, every day takes us one step closer to a New Normal that is beyond our imagination.

Someone’s Got to Supply the Framework

It is clear that when managing complexity, we have much to learn. Research shows that frameworks are essential to becoming a human that is well-adapted to complexity.

The paradigms that many are beginning to transition toward are known as integral and holistic, and are unlike anything prior. They represent a major leap, and require us to press the pause button. If you find yourself questioning every basic assumption about how life works, and about how to live our lives and run our society, then you know your journey is well underway.

We’ve searched the world over, and found only two frameworks that support the mind to go beyond the conventional way of thinking. The Holistic Management Framework developed by Allan Savory and the Human Emergence Framework developed by Clare W. Graves , both stimulate humanity to develop the capacity to resolve complex problems.

Born twenty-one years before Savory, Graves made this prescient remark which predicts the need for something like the Holistic Management Framework:

“We can’t make the Green to Yellow Transition (i.e. the leap into the integral paradigm) until someone like me comes up with a new way of thinking about whatever the problems are, because someone’s got to supply the framework.” - Clare W. Graves

As if on cue, Savory spotted from his personal experience that human psychology gets in the way of the transition to a new paradigm.

“But when a new idea goes against our experience, knowledge, and prejudices – what we know rather than what we think – our mind blocks it out, distorts it, or rebels against it. This inability to accept new ideas outside prevailing beliefs is called the paradigm effect, and none of us can escape it.”

- Allan Savory

Highly compatible, the two frameworks help us to comprehend and manage succession, each in their own way. (Succession refers to a process by which a plant, animal, or human community gives way to another until stability is reached.)

The Holistic Management Framework deals with succession in nature by enabling us to choose tools wisely by anticipating the outcome a particular tool will have on ecosystem process function. The Human Emergence Framework deals with succession of the human mind by enabling us to release barriers to human emergence (succession).

We weave together these two frameworks in all our training, starting with Holistic Management Fundamentals, where we first learn how to make holistically-informed decisions, and we introduce the human stages of development to help individuals make sense of self in their surrounding world.

When practised together, these two frameworks support the transition to a new paradigm that has the capacity to cope with wicked problems.
