Distilling Wisdom from a Seed Mind

Sheila Cooke • April 1, 2026

How do transformative ideas emerge before the world is ready for them?

The Seed Mind Book Charting Series explores the lives and thinking of people who saw patterns others missed — and whose insights later became essential for navigating new conditions.

Seed Minds

A Seed Mind experiences new life conditions before others and develops ideas that later become widely useful. These individuals often appear ahead of their time and help society navigate emerging complexity.

  • Jan Smuts — Holism and Evolution.
  • Clare Graves — Emergent Cyclical Theory.
  • Allan Savory — Holistic Management.

In this series, we chart the thinking of such mavericks through their books — not just reading, but mapping the conditions, patterns, and insights behind their ideas.

Why This Matters

Many of today’s challenges require new ways of thinking about complex systems.

By studying Seed Minds, we gain insight into:

  • What conditions shaped this person’s thinking.
  • What patterns they saw that others missed.
  • What ideas emerged and why they later mattered.
  • How transformative ideas develop over time.
  • How to encourage new thinking in self and others.

The objective is to trace the life of a maverick — someone who demonstrates independence of thought and action, often refusing to adhere to dominant beliefs of their time.

Through this process we explore:

How do breakthrough ideas emerge — and why are they often rejected before they are understood?

First Series: Allan Savory

We focus on Allan Savory — a pioneering thinker in land management.

Nearly sixty years ago, Allan introduced new ideas about the underlying causes of desertification. These perspectives continue to challenge prevailing scientific views.

Participants will chart Allan Savory’s just-released memoir:

UnSavory: African Stories of Wildlife, War, and the Birth of Holistic Management — Allan Savory

This book reveals the ecological, political, and personal experiences that led to Holistic Management — addressing a 10,000-year-old puzzle: reversing desertification.

We will use this as an OPTIONAL reference book:

Hosted by Christopher Cooke 2nd of December 2022 15:00 to 16:00 PM London GMT, (UTC+0) Zoom login details will be emailed after you register. The publication of Carl Calleman’s new book, The Living Universe, The New Theory of Origins (2022), invites a new conversation from the edge of our conventional paradigm. I have known Carl and tracked his writing for over 20 years. I devoured his new book in a few hours. Carl’s writing takes us into a robust and profound appreciation of the primary patterns of our existence. His appreciation of a Living Universe invites us to refine and expand our impression of our existence. One sentence holds my curiosity and inspired this event: “I did not start out writing this book thinking that the Universe is living.” Join us for a presentation by Carl, with plenty of time for your questions. Be prepared to be surprised. I hope to see you there, Christopher Cooke

RethinkX has produced a provocative publication entitled, Rethinking Humanity, by James Arbib and Tony Seba, June 2020. They argue that a New Age of Freedom awaits us but assert that this future is by no means predetermined. I have something to say about that.
